Stitch techniques:

This stitch is a composite decorative stitch. You can use butterfly chain stitch for decoration on many different types of fabrics, woven and non-woven. First pass - make a row consisting of series of three vertical stitches. Try to keep the same space between the underlying base groups of stitches as the width of those groups of stitches.

Second pass - tie each group of stitches with a twisted chain stitch. Just like on the picture. While clutching groups of three stitches needle should not enter the foundation fabric.

Variations:

You can try different number of vertical stitches.

You can make some of the vertical stitches shorter or longer.

Try to use different thread weight for the first or the second passes, you can even alternate weight by the groups of stitches.

Use different colors.
